The Finnish Brain Research and Rehabilitation Center Neuron
The concept of The Finnish Brain Research and Rehabilitation Center Neuron
Neuron is a private institution owned by The Finnish Brain Research and Rehabilitation Foundation. It aims to offer up-to-date services for neurological patients in neurological rehabilitation.
Neuron is situated 30 kilometers to the east of the city of Kuopio, and a mere 15 minute drive from the airport in a beautiful and peaceful area on the shore of lake Kallavesi.
Methods
Gait
Body weight supported treadmill training
The goal is to restore walking ability in patients with stroke.
1st phase:Walking with a gait trainer, where body weight is partially supported with a harness. Legs are moved by a machine simulating normal walking.
2nd phase: Patient walks on treadmill. Body weight may be supported with the harness. Gradually support is decreased and walking speed increased.
Hand
Constraint-induced movement therapy of the hand
The scientific basis has been recently fully established. The use of the non-affected hand is restrained by a cast for many hours a day, while the affected arm is effectively trained. The program lasts a minimum of 10 days. To participate patients should have minor movement in the paretic hand and high motivation.
Sensation
Sensory stimulation
This treatment increases afferent stimuli to the brain from the paretic limb in order to enhance plastic reorganisation in the brain. It is suitable for stroke patients after some weeks or even years from the ischemic or haemorrhagic event. Patients with minor movement or spasticity in the affected hand or foot benefit most.
